Yesterday we had a day in the park near our hotel. After Liz ruled out doing any swimming in China (see last post) we've turned to pumping iron in our chic urban gym and running around the park (about 1 mile per lap.)
This park is fantastic! Before the heat of the day it is filled with older people practicing tai chi, women's dance troups moving to Britney Spears, old guys doing caligraphy with water on the stones, badminton, basketball, and strange exercises involving walking backwards and slapping the backs of hands.
Below are a bunch of pictures from the park. (Be sure to look at them in full screen mode! It's the button in the bottom right corner of the slideshow.) We'll put up some great videos in the next post.
Here's some guys playing basketball. I don't know how good they are but they're definitely respectable.
Tai chi! Everyone seems to be doing it.
Here are a bunch of miscellaneous shots from the park. In the vending machine picture the first three items are condoms, the rest are candy.
Some ladies practicing a dancing scarf routing and some other ladies doing a tennis racket and tennis ball dance routine. What fun! It sure beats TV.
this is wonderful that you can show your world. any flea market for bargains--but how much cheaper can things get than in china?

I am so pleased to see pics of you guys and to read how it's going. I can't even tell you. It's fascinating plus: WE MISSSSSS YOUUUUUU!!!!!! It's really fun to see all that you're up to. Glad to see Liz is running and that you're both wise-cracking as usual. Everything's fine here in A2. We go see a 3-man circus tomorrow at the Leslie Science Center. Henry said "Liz" and pointed out the window yesterday for reasons we can't explain (every time the door bell rings he says your names, but no one had rung). We were fooled for about a fraction of a second. Then came the crushing reality. xx Gillian

Hey Reggie! It's difficult to find a flea market here. There are whole districts of the city that seem like flea markets. In any case, a lot of things in China are just a bit cheaper than the U.S., not borderline free. Street food is essentially free but good quality clothes and jewelry are about 1/2 price.

Gillian! There are a bunch of adorable kids walking around here but none as cute as Henry. Friday night we saw a circus too (unfortunately, no photos allowed). It was scary -- very scary. We're talking watching a game of Russian Roulette scary.

Say what you will about old Chinese, they really know how to move, silly or otherwise.

After walking around the city all day we can see the appeal of morning tai chi and funny walks. Our legs are so stiff.
